You see, the roots of avocado requires good aeriation and oxygen. This can be a problem in fields where water logging conditions can occur during the monsoon season. This is very common in black cotton soil.
Planting avocados on raised beds prevents any water saturation near the root system even during heavy rainfall. Plants respond exceedingly well in such conditions, which is evident from my orchard in Bhopal.
Below you can see pictures of my 18 month old avocado orchard planted on raised beds in black cotton soil and we have already achieved excellent growth and fruiting in a very short span of time.
Netafim also suggests to plant a cover crop in between the rows to remove any excess water and to prevent soil erosion in the first few years of the avocado orchard growth period. I personally did not do it, but could be a good idea to implement it. This might also be quite crucial thing to do if avocados are planted on a slope with a good gradient as the roots of the cover crop will hold the soil and your field will experience little to no soil erosion. People from the North East India, take note of this.
